Wallingford Little League 2020 Season Update

Coronavirus Update From League President Joshua Carroll

I just wanted to take a few minutes to give you some updates on the status of the 2020 Wallingford Little League season. While there has been little discussion from the state in regard to most youth activities, we have been working with the town to come up with a plan to safely start our season if, and when, that is possible.

What the State is Saying

The Governor has announced that May 20 is the tentative date to initiate Phase 1 of re-opening Connecticut. It is unlikely that this date will have an impact on our league, nor will it impact large social gatherings.

If all goes well, the next phase could begin on June 4. We are unsure if youth sports and activities would be included in that target date, nor do we know the restrictions that would be put in place. We are speculating that the earliest we would be able to begin a season would be June 29, which is when summer camps are allowed to open.

Please keep in mind that there has been very limited public discussion regarding youth sports at the state level and these dates are all subject to change.

Safety Concerns

Over the past few weeks and until the season opens, our group of volunteers will continue to discuss and implement plans and policies to keep our children as safe as possible. We are in communication with officials from Little League and are open to ideas from parents for ideas to improve safety.

We are in contact with officials from other local leagues and will actively share ideas to improve the safety of our players and fans.

Parent Survey

Parents will receive an email with a survey regarding this season (if you have not received the survey, please contact us). This survey is designed to determine if there is still interest in having a Little League season and, if you are interested, to determine availability on possible season start dates.

This survey will go a long way in determining if we pursue having a 2020 season, so we ask that everyone complete the short survey.

Refund Policy

Fortunately, Wallingford Little League is in a financial position to be able to offer 100% refunds to anyone that decides they do not want their child to play or who will be unable to play for another reason. Once we know more about a season start date, we will include information regarding refunds and will give parents some time to decide. If possible, we ask parents to wait until that time to request refunds.

Current League Status

All teams have been formed, but we anticipate that we will have to eliminate or juggle teams a little bit. It is possible that teams will merge. We will do our best, but wanted to make you aware of the possibility – especially at the Major’s level, where players stick with the same teams and coaches.

Last week, Little League International canceled the Little League World Series and regional tournaments (although they left open the possibility of a district tournament). In addition, they passed a series of temporary rule changes that allow flexibility to local leagues.

As we receive more information, we will pass it on to you.
